My genius project is going slow and steady. I am going to look over my notes and see what might be or could be a good way to get books for my project besides buying all the books I need. The whole dilemma I have right now is what kind of books I should put in the box. Random titles and stories might work but I do not know what the main majority would enjoy reading or seeing in the box. Different genres would add even more problems to this because there are so many and they are all so different in styles and formats. Obviously I am not going to have picture books and cook books, mostly stories and novels. I am worried about having new books or old books; I personally believe that no one will read any of the older books because they may have already read them or maybe they are not interested in them since they are old. I have many things that are up to chance because I am mainly letting other people have their way with my project. They get to use my cases without me telling them what to do because I cannot be there all the time to explain what is going on or what I am trying to do. I am not really confident in my project because I do not know if people even want to read books anymore or have the time to read books anymore with all this new technology. Currently I am getting my supplies and plans together to craft my first book case and hopefully get as close as possible to putting it in the ground. I really want to complete this project due to the fact that last year many of the seniors did not complete their projects and it was almost rare to have a senior who did. I also would love many people to try and utilize the easy way to access a free book and good scenery with a mixture of cardio, which is good for anyone. Home Depot will be visited very soon.

This could possibly be the part in my project that makes me want to give up. The part that is not in my control, the part that is in someone else's hands, the part where I wait for what happens next. My project involves me building a structure that must be able to stand by itself and definitely be weather resistant or else all the books would be destroyed which would cost more money to replace. The best way to do this would be to plant my bookcase into the ground so that it doesn't move at all and cannot be easily destroyed or uprooted. This is the best solution to this set of problems but the one thing from stopping me from continuing with building and possibly finishing this entire project is that I need to get a builders permit in order to erect the structure. I have made a call into the office where I can set up a meeting to get my permit but that takes a very long time to actually set up. The receptionist mentioned how it may very well take up to a month to actually schedule the meeting. Knowing that I cannot finish my project without this step that someone else has to help me with might put my project in the grave. I can do everything I need to do including the actual building part; I just cannot actually plant them. It is very annoying not knowing if I will be able to finish this project in time because of someone else's actions.
Being a Junior in high school is an incredible amount of fun and goes by even faster. I really am going to miss that year and regret not trying to do more. I am going to have one other regret along with that naturally; not doing more of my genius project. I did not forget about it and actually made a tiny amount of progress which is much better than doing nothing. I need a builders permit in order to do this project correctly and efficiently and as easily as possible. Basically a night and day difference at the cost of a months wait for a permit. I put in a few calls to the Carlsbad City Hall office and they did not particularly enjoy picking up their phones. I called the City Manager's office and after a period of time she picked up and told me to call the Carlsbad City Planning Division. After waiting another period of time the receptionist picked up and then proceed to direct me to the Building Division. At this point I thought about changing my genius project to making these offices more easily accessible and easy to know who to call. I then had to call the Building Division multiple different times because of reasons I had not mentioned on my note pad of notes of the experience. I do remember leaving my phone number and other types of information about how to contact me. A couple hours later I was contacted by the Building Division and because life is messy and annoying sometimes; and quite ironic often times, I was told again to schedule an appointment with the Parks and Recreation Manager for getting my permit, or at least maybe get my permit, maybe I walk in and he will tell me to talk to someone else. Coming back to the topics of regret and doing things better next time; there are really only two things I would have done better, have more snacks at hand for the waiting periods and not mentioning that I was in highschool to the people because maybe they are not going to treat me as fair. Seriously though if my career choice doesn't work out I am going to work at the Carlsbad City Hall and fix some office problems and people will know who the right person to call is the very first time. Please vote for me.
The Forum was a new event that is exclusive to Sage Creek high school. The current junior class would pitch their project to a group of seniors and sophomores and then receive feedback on what to work on or what to add to their project. The system works well because the veterans get to help the rookies with problems they might not have thought about or issues that they cannot see in their planning. The sophomores being there helps too because they get to be exposed to the project and could maybe help with unforeseen problems because they might be thinking in a different way because they don’t know the rules or parameters of this project. After a break; the seniors then give a TED talk on their projects and tell the juniors and sophomores formally what they are doing. Listening to the seniors is so helpful because they really are used to thinking about potential problems and shortcuts to accomplish things that can help you with your project. I now know that I have to think about what kind of material I am going to put in the cases. If I leave it solely relying on the good morales of another person they might just take books just because they can. This is why I am now going to frequently return to the cases myself and check on them as well as add more material to the cases to ensure that new books are always in rotation. This would help make my project more exciting and less dull for the people going out there and getting involved.
Problems have arose from my planning of this project. The obvious question, but not the first one I thought of, is where am I going to get the books for the cases? What should be the name of these cases? How many am I going to make? How am I going to afford the time and materials I need to create these cases? Where am I going to plant these cases? All these questions came up either recently during the last friday's "speed dating" activity or a few days after my first blog post. The biggest one on my list is the location of where I am going to place the cases. I spoke to a profesional that day and she told me that I could use the internet to find maps of trails in Carlsbad. This could help me out, although I have not looked at any sort of maps yet, I believe that this will help my with my location problem. The book problem might be an issue but it all depends on how many cases I make and how big I make them. Size and Quantity are all problems that will be resolved later though. Looking at locations I believe that the trails around Sage Creek will not be the best possible choice solely due to the fact that it is too far away from peoples' homes. The ideal location would be around a residential area and I believe that Sage Creek is too far from the closest houses in proximity. As you can see in the image the main trails are on the far side of Sage Creek and I do not want people having to travel that far to get to a book case. They might not even realize that they are there if the potential walkers, joggers, or runners are living that far away. This also bring another problem to the table; how are people going to know the cases are there?
This project was assigned to us as Juniors and it's something that must be done in order to graduate. I can drive now because I am of age and when I am driving I tend to think to myself about random things that are presently going on. The whole drive home I couldn't get down a solid idea but when I entered my neighborhood I saw something that basically gave me my idea. An older man was running on the trails around my neighborhood with a book in his hand. I watched him, rolling slowly through my neighborhood, as he put his book into this case and took another one out. I instantly knew that I wanted to make this little structure the main focus of my Genious Project. It encourages people to run these trails and get excersize while also influencing joggers to take up a good read. Of course this only works if people are courteous and do not take all the books and mess with what essentially is a case on a wooden stake. I have no idea if this will workout the way I want it to but I really hope that people use this as intended and actually benefit from something that I genuinely care about.
